Anderson Adventures in Florida

We were blessed this past Christmas with the chance to visit my brother and his family in Navarre, Florida. We hatched a quick road trip plan once it dawned on me that moving out west would make it even harder to see a brother I haven't seen in 6 years! (how's that for a crazy, run-on sentence? Also, for you regular readers, there's no word on the move yet.)

As soon as Steve was done with his bus route on the 23rd we hit the road, drove straight through, and arrived in Navarre just in time for Christmas Eve dinner. The trip down was a test of one's driving skills, to say the least. Two-thirds of Illinois was experiencing a freezing rain/drizzle event and we drove through all of it. I quit counting flipped vehicles and semis, it was stressing me out. For the record, if not for the humidity, I could live in the hills of Alabama or Tennessee. Both states are beautiful! Illinois... there are no words to describe my contempt!

Christmas Eve found the 6 cousins getting to know each other some and 2 of the adults trying to maintain an upright position having had no sleep for 20+ hours. Christmas day was great fun, exchanging gifts & hanging out with Mike, Amber, & the kids. We formulated a plan for the remainder of our days together, based on a weather forecast that turned out to be WRONG each day, and basically laid around all day. It was such a huge stretch from our normal daily routine, but it was really nice to be away from farm chores, customers, and ringing telephones. Amen!

I said from the get-go that if I only did one thing in Florida besides hug my brother it would be to take my family to the ocean. So off we went! It. was. incredible. The kids chased waves, hunted sea shells, and buried each other in the sand. The wind was pretty relentless, hence the waves, and the water was cold, but it was so much fun. Mountains. Oceans. Initially it's a toss up, but then I remember the humidity. Mountains it is, but man the ocean is so awesome! God in all His glory with the wind & the waves & the sounds!

All the kids ended up soaked and sandy. Hot showers were on tap for later.

The sand was so white & clean, and full of beautiful shells. Mudge especially like this.

This is my brother's youngest. I think Mudge has met her match!

Me and my little brother!

None of us could figure out what the name of this was. It basically took you from the parking lot to the beach, but I thought the beach came right up to the parking lot! If anyone knows the technical term for this bridge-like walkway to the beach, let me know! I love this shot!

When I looked at these beautifully colored houses only one thing would come to mind.... hurricane! Isn't that horrible? The houses were really neat out by the beach. Up on stilts, palm trees, vibrant colors. It was so neat, and sandy :)

A genuine Florida Christmas tree. I loved it. Fake, lit-up snowmen in some front yards was just plain silly.

This is the boat I like to think brought our fresh fish in to market. We visited Joe Patti's Fish Market in Pensacola and bought lots of shrimp and a fish called Amber Jack. Mike grilled the fish and boiled the shrimp with red potatoes & corn on the cob. We ate like kings!

We visited the local zoo, which was fantastic. In case you're wondering, the young man in the wheel chair is my oldest nephew. He had dropped a stool on his big toe the day before we arrived. He has 20+ stitches in that toe now and walks with a cane, or travels by chair if it's available. He'll be healed and ready for surfing when the waters warm up.

I'm not sure what's happening here, but I love the faces.

Our little zoo keeper.

All together now, awwwwww.

On Sunday we visited the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola. I can't say enough about it. It was fantastic. You would never guess there were so many types of airplanes. It was very well done.

I can say, without a doubt, all our kids quickly latched onto one another. You'd never know some of them were meeting for the first time that weekend.

Thank you, God, for the chance to get together with loved ones! We had a ball!

One Door Shut, Another Opens

Well, here goes.....
(no tears tammy!)

Almost 3 months ago Steve applied for a position with Park County, Colorado. My home state. We have been waiting on pins & needles! We've searched for churches, homeschool groups, dance lessons, tae kwon do lessons, library locations, etc. We've scoured every possible real estate option and had narrowed it down to the land I highlighted in this post. We referred to it as "ours". I have pictures of it hanging on the fridge for crying out loud!

I'm going to miss it....

Steve did not get the job in Park County. Period. I'm a little angry, I have to admit. I know his qualifications. I know what he knows, and how talented an equipment mechanic he is! He never even got a phone call! The human resource staff has repeatedly apologized that the department heads hiring for that job never even contacted us. Something seems fishy about the whole thing. I wonder if someone's brother/son/cousin didn't just find themselves in a new job.....

Not long ago, Steve said to me, "I can't help but wonder if God doesn't have something else waiting for us."

Well, guess what. He may have just that!

Late last week I received an email from the National Park System. Yes. National. Park. System. It was sent to alert us to a job opening that Steve is qualified for, and by the end of the week, WILL be applying for.

Family and friends, this is just a small glimpse as to what could be Steve's work environment, should his application be accepted for Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic.

This is Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water. It's found in the Curecanti National Recreation area of Gunnison Colorado. Should Steve get the job, his shop would be right on the shores of this lake.

And this is only minutes away:

I have goose bumps just thinking about it!

Also?!?

One word.

Kayaking!

Stay tuned......

No News Is Good News

We called about hubby's application. They have it, but won't be reviewing any apps for 2 weeks. Apparently they've had 2 crucial administrative positions open up and they need to tend to those first.

So glad to hear they haven't filled the position yet! We're still in the running!

More updates to come....

The Suspense Is Killing Me

Well, I've eluded to the fact that I have something to share...

I just can't keep it secret any longer...

Anderson Adventures has started the ball rolling...

We might be moving!!!

Hubby has applied for the Head Heavy Equipment Mechanic position in Park County, Colorado, my home state!

Just when I had succumbed to the idea that Wisconsin was now home. HA! God has such a sense of humor.

We are in the early stages of land hunting on that end, via the internet, and slimming down our possessions on this end. Emailing numerous realtors on that end, hoping to sell our properties ourselves on this end.

All while homeschooling, keeping our business floating in this economy, and trying to remain sane.

So, if you would, please pray for us. We need patience, we need foresight, we need wisdom, we need SLEEP!

I'll leave you with some pictures of a piece of property that we're interested in. This will be the first piece of land we'll walk with a realtor, should we fly out for an interview. Lord, make it soon. When it snows out there, it doesn't mess around, it piles up, but then God, you already knew that...

Cheep-Cheep, scratch-scratch - Round 2

A year ago last Saturday, we received 15 chicks in the mail. This is what was happening in our kitchen around that time:

Well, 3 weeks ago my friend Machelle asked if I would be willing to keep an incubator at my house to hatch some eggs. Why not?!

Voila!

We currently have 9 newborns cheeping in the kitchen. There are more eggs in the incubator, so we'll see what happens today!

It is never dull here at Anderson Adventures!

Memorial Weekend '07 Recap

The last few days have been such a blur, that I'm sure I'll be leaving out some details. There is no doubt we worked hard, played some, and will need to catch up on some sleep.

On Friday night, Steve & I enjoyed a date. We dined at my current employer's, on the patio, and then launched the kayaks off their shore. We had the lake to ourselves, the water was like glass, and there was nary a bug to be found. As we headed in for the night we were engaged in a territory dispute with the lake's resident bachelor beaver. When he'd slap his tail on the water's surface it sounded like gunshot. It was fun to paddle around looking for him, only to find he'd given us the slip and was tailing us.

Saturday was spent working around the farm (as I'm told I have one now), and the new Shop site. I don't know the details of what Steve accomplished that particular day, as I was up to my eyeballs in horse fence & chicken wire, and recyclables (don't ask). Luckily my kids have great fun tagging along, and had been up late the night before at sleepovers. They all napped. Then I headed off to work, and poured myself into bed somewhere close to midnight.

Sunday morning was spent resting at church, and I don't mean catching a few winks. ( I can't believe how many people I've seen do that!) Anyhoo... we came home to lunch in the oven, which I have to say is one of my favorite things. I love having the smell of roast greet you as you open the door! Then it was nap time for me & Mudge, as I was not functioning at that point.

After nap, I wandered down to the work site to find this....

And no... our site isn't really bowl-shaped. The picture is wonky.
You're looking at the beginning of our heated floor. It was like an assembly line, so I'm told. Bud had a job, Sis had a job, and Steve & Joe scrambled for 2 days getting it from this to this:

to this:

We wrapped up our weekend with a couple hours on our local, beautiful Red Cedar River. Steve & the girls used our new tandem kayak, and Bud went solo for the first time in mine. He did very well, but had to be reminded "slow & in control".

Before we even launched the boats we were treated to the antics of 4 river otters playing & dunking each other. Then a short time later we watched a huge snapping turtle take a slide down a very steep bank into the water, ker-sploosh! Not sure if it meant to take that particular route, as I can imagine it walking along the upper bank, minding its own business, and then the dirt giving way.

We saw numerous ducks, geese, and the ever-present eagle. I've never paddled that river and not seen at least 2 eagles. One stopped escorting us downriver long enough to pose:

Steve & I were able to have a good chuckle for a good chunk of the river trip. See, Bud is afraid of bears. Not your normal, healthy respect for a large, powerful animal. No, it's more like frenzied fear. So, as we're paddling along, we hear this very loud, echoing large-animal sound and Bud gets this look of terror on his face. Steve ran with it. He said, "wow, did you hear that bear?!" Knowing full well it was just a cow in the neighboring field. LOL.

So for over 1/2 hour this cow bellowed every so often, and each time you'd think Bud was going to turn that boat around and paddle up river to the put in point. Finally we had to tell. So now Bud's fear of the Dairy Bear will go down in history. It was great, and yes... we often have a good chuckle at Bud's expense. Isn't that what kids are for?!

I'll leave you with a couple more pics, and wishing you all a great week.

Cheep-Cheep, scratch-scratch

For those of you who don't know, this is how baby chicks come. They were born yesterday! Then they were marked boy/girl, and boxed up to ship out to their new homes.

A friend of mine, who split the order with me, picked them up at 7 am and had them here right away. We divided them up, hoping I didn't get any boys!

I want to draw your attention to the chick on the far left. Do you notice her size compared to the others?

She has already been dubbed "Big Mama"
Doesn't she look like she'll rule the roost?

On a different note.....
We had the local power company here to estimate our needs for our new building. It sounds like it's going to cost us 1/2 of what we originally budgeted for the power to be run out to the new site! Praise God! That is good news!
